MOVE TO IMPEACH NYAKO THICKENS AS ADAMAWA LAWMAKERS ORDER ARREST OF COMMISSIONERS

The political landscape of Adamawa State became tense on Thursday amidst alleged plans to impeach the state governor, Murtala Nyako, and moves by the House of Assembly to investigate the expenditures of the state government.

In what could be seen as a step towards the impeachment process, the Assembly on Thursday ordered the arrest of four commissioners for their failure to appear before the lawmakers.

On Wednesday, the Assembly directed six commissioners, Secretary to the State Government, and the Accountant General of the state to appear before it over issues bordering on budget implementation.

The Thursday plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Kwamoti Laori (PDP-Numan) directed the state Commissioner of Police to arrest four of the affected commissioners who failed to show up and bring them before the house on Monday by 10 am.

The affected commissioners were that of agriculture, Lucy Ishaku; health, Lilian Stephen; commerce, Ahmed Gorko; and land and survey, Abdulrahman Shuaibu.

The Assembly, which acknowledged receipt of a letter from the Secretary to the State Government, Kobis Thimnu, over his inability to honour the Thursday invitation, asked him to appear unfailingly on
Monday.

The commissioner for Finance, Ibrahim Vokna, his counterpart for Works, Umaru Atiku, and the state Accountant General, Nasir Mohammed, had earlier appeared before the house.

On May 27, the Adamawa State House of Assembly gave Mr. Nyako and his government an ultimatum of three days to pay back the illegal deductions made from workers’ salaries and allowances of May 2014 in the state.

This led to suspicions of an impeachment process against the governor as the Assembly had hitherto appeared complacent in checking the excesses of the executive.

“For instance, some teachers have worked for 22 months without salaries, with some contracts issued and not executed, and so many issues of governance that it was expected that the Assembly would act.

“But it was seemly quiet about these issues and the antecedent of the leadership of the House has always indicated support for Governor Murtala Nyako,” said Garba Musa, a political analyst in Yola, the state capital.

ODUMEGWU: NORTHERN LEADERS DESTROYING THE NORTH SO THAT THEY CAN SAY THE PRESIDENT IS INCOMPETENT

Mr. Odimegwu, a former head of the Nigerian Breweries Plc, said Nigeria had shown it is not ready for democracy because of widespread violence, ineptitude, corruption and illiteracy, saying the country should instead go the way of Egypt, where the military ousted the country’s democratically-elected government in 2013.

“Economically, things have gotten worse,” he said. “Politically, when you look around there are many signs that Nigeria is not ripe for democracy. It may not be a nice thing to say, but the signs are there.

“So it is very difficult to say that Nigeria is ripe for democracy because what we are practicing is certainly not democracy. Look around the world in Egypt where the military have come back, Nigeria should be heading towards that way instead of this caricature these politicians are conducting. It may not be a nice thing to say, but we have to decide what is good for us.”
He outlined the problems of a nation he accused of celebrating corruption and mediocrity, and that is tottering on the brink of collapse.

He said Nigeria as a state had failed already. He said what is left is armed conflict from all sides.

“So Nigeria as a state, has failed already. We cannot be saying it may fail. The only thing remaining is for us to carry guns and the way things are going that is coming. God should help the oil to dry up faster, so we can begin to use our brains.”
He accused the government of not leading well and of not sourcing quality advisers.

“Many of the people who have accepted to lead don’t know what leadership is all about. Many of them go there and surround themselves with fools. If you do not know what you are doing but you have men and women of substance that can look at issues critically and deal with issues the way they should be dealt with for the benefit of the country, then Nigeria would move forward,” he said.
He said Nigeria’s recent status as Africa’s largest economy bears no effect on the people as Nigeria had already failed economically and politically.

He said the present government at all levels stinks badly of corruption, and celebrates fraudulent billionaires who should have been executed.

“In the past, you had people within the economic space that really added value; before you could say that this man is a rich man. Before in Nigeria, if you saw someone like Sir Odimegwu Ojukwu and they saw that he was a rich man with his Rolls Royce, everyone knew that he was a serious businessman and everyone knew the source of his wealth.

“If you went further to check, you would see that he was paying his taxes. When you hear that Odutola was a rich man, all his neighbours knew what he was doing to be termed a rich man. The same went for others like Dantata and so on and so forth. But today, you have charlatans and rent seekers parading the landscape.

“People who in sane countries should be in prison are the ones mostly parading themselves as rich men. You have somebody today that nobody knows anything about and suddenly, tomorrow he is rich man with ten private jets and everybody will be applauding him.”
Mr. Odimegwu spoke strongly against corruption, and said he has never stolen and never will, and called for capital punishment for corruption.

“In Iran, they just executed a billionaire. There are many billionaires in Nigeria that should be executed. I don’t subscribe to Sharia law because I am not a Muslim. But I like that aspect of Sharia Law, like many people have said online. In Russia, Putin came and put the so-called richest man in prison because no one is above the law in sane countries. In Italy, Berlusconi, the former prime minister was taken to court and sentenced. Nigeria should learn from these things. It is not nice to say things like this, it is difficult for me to say these things but they are necessary. If people like us don’t say these things then who the hell will say it?

“Anybody who steals money in a country where pregnant women die should be executed by firing squad. When you do it for 10 years and you begin to shoot billionaires, former presidents, former senators, then everybody will sit up.  This a country where a man steals N2 billion, then you take him to court and they pass judgement and give him a fine of N200,000 or N2 million. For a man who stole N2 billion, is it a joke?”

After his term at the breweries, Mr. Odimegwu was appointed head of the population body by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012. He left the office in October 2013 amid a controversy over his remarks that all past national census were fraudulent, and that he was set to usher in Nigeria’s first ever-credible census.

In the interview with ThisDay, Mr. Odimegwu defended his position, and accused President Jonathan of not acting on a credible work plan he presented, and choosing political considerations over a genuine desire for change.

He said instead of acting on his plan, Mr. Jonathan named a committee and that the vice president, Namadi Sambo, altered the plan. The president himself refused to act on the proposal, which was to cost N600 billion.

“There and then, what I would have done, if I were him, was to approve what I had given him. But like most public officers, he set up a committee and a committee is a recipe for not getting things done. He gave the committee the mandate to do the analysis and come back to him in four weeks. After eight weeks, this committee was still talking nonsense. I recall I did 172 presentations at various levels during its sitting,” he said.

He said eventually, the north hijacked the plan while the south introduced religion and other things into the proposal.

The plan was to cost much because it would have gone beyond mere head counting, and would have required producing clear digital images for 200,000 localities in Nigeria.

“You have to go into all these 200,000 localities and number all the houses inside them and produce a zip code for the country. You have to go inside every building and identify the households inside the residential buildings and produce a household register.

“You have to hire up two million enumerators and train them on how to use the biometric machines to go and do biometric census of Nigerians. Then you have to get the companies that will give us these biometric machines to come and configure it to fit our environment.

As a former head of the breweries, he said he remained comfortable and did not serve to receive salaries, instead that he used his money to run the establishment because he wanted to help save a dying nation.

He said he fired a permanent secretary at the National Population Commission for stealing N470 million.

“I put a second one, he messed up and I threw him out too and I put a third one. At some point, they said that I couldn’t sack permanent secretaries, but I said I have already sacked him. When all these things continued to happen, I began to realize that nobody seemed serious about this, and I am leaving because at my age and level of proficiency and professionalism, I don’t do nonsense.”

“I didn’t go there for the salary but they paid me N913, 000 per month. When I carried my commissioners to clubs, I would pay N3 million at the club. Seven of them, I gave money. I lived in the Transcorp Hilton Hotel for one year and I spent N97 million there. The president refunded me N20 million when I applied to him. As a matter of fact, that was where we developed the plan with all these commissioners, because after 7 p.m. there is no light at NPC. There was even no headquarters. Nothing was working there. The commission was deliberately killed, so it will not fulfill its constitutional obligations.”

Mr. Odimegwu said he resigned- and was not sacked- after it became clear the president was not comfortable with him, particularly after being attacked by the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

He slammed the government for not acting to arrest insecurity and allowing those responsible for violence to go unpunished.

“Someone will come out and say he is going to make the country ungovernable and he actually proceeds to make the country ungovernable by violence everywhere. Then you have the people in government who know the people that are making the country ungovernable and they are not doing anything to them. You have leaders who swear an oath of office and once they enter the office are no longer interested in the oath.

“Everybody is only interested in their own selfish ends, to steal money thinking money is the ultimate measure of a man but when they get money they will see that they have murdered sleep because when you get money the wrong way, you would have murdered sleep.

“We don’t have basic security. We will send our children to school and some people will go and carry them from there. Then you will see some lunatics on television saying to the whole world that they will sell our children. Is this really happening in the 21st century?”

Mr. Odimegwu, who was prominent as a key player in former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government denied supporting Mr. Obasanjo’s third term bid.

He said in his capacity as an informal adviser to Mr. Obasanjo, and at the same time being in the private sector, supporters of the extension of the administration’s tenure merely exploited his closeness to the former leader, and used his name.

With the extent of the rot in Nigeria, he said, accepting quality leadership was the only way out.
He denied not coming out for election to serve, saying the political parties frustrated him.

“I came out to contest. (Former CBN Governor Charles) Soludo came out to contest in Anambra State and a lot more good people have come out to contest in some other states…. But the corrupt people in the system will sabotage those good ones,” he said.

“So good people usually come out but they are sabotaged. Professor Charles Soludo, a First Class Economist of international repute went to APGA and they said APGA didn’t clear him. Who is APGA not to clear Professor Soludo? If APGA clears Soludo they are only doing themselves a favour. If they don’t clear him, then it means APGA is nothing because Soludo is Soludo, like Eze Festus Odimegwu is Eze Festus Odimegwu.”

A first class graduate of industrial chemistry, Mr. Odimegwu lavishly vaunted his accomplishments, and didn’t seem to bother about public reaction to his remarks. He said his interest in government transcended wealth as he was already wealthy.

“When I went to Abuja, I went to serve our nation to make sure we have progress as a nation because I am qualified to serve and I can do without a salary. When you see my house, would you say I am a hungry man? I have been living in Ikoyi since 1982. I went to Abuja, I went whole heartedly to help, but what now happened? The public space is filled with people who take rubbish and are rubbish and continue to live in rubbish.

“Having worked with Nigerian Breweries alone, I can live well till I die. So it is not about me. It is that what is happening around us is very painful. Everybody likes to make fun of me that ‘I think I am intelligent.’ But I am intelligent! People should not trample on intelligence and make a mockery of it because we have fools in the public space. Unless you have people like me in leadership positions and in public space, Nigeria will not go anywhere, it will continue to degrade and all of us will continue to suffer for it”

He tackled the media too, accusing many journalists of ineptitude.

“Let’s even look at the press or the media how many of you people are serious? You can do your analysis. There is this (Akin) Osuntokun that I know is very brilliant. How many people that write in public space are like that? Look at when Soludo was writing, El-Rufai the same thing. But these are serious minded people. El-Rufai is brilliant even if I don’t agree with everything he says because he has his political side. But 80 per cent of the time he is a serious guy. People should listen to such people whether they are in government or not.

Mr. Odimegwu criticized the National Assembly for constantly “summoning” government officials.

“Then they have some small, small boys there in the House of Representatives summoning people. Summoning who? (Hisses) I say damn you! You cannot summon me. The people you can summon are the criminals. I am not surprised that government officials are now refusing to answer such silly summons unless the president allows it, because it is a caricature of democracy.

He tackled the north for not dealing with Boko Haram that has killed more than 12,000 people in five years.

“Look at the north that is supposed to be getting the advantage. Is the north better than the south? Is it not sheer foolishness for anybody from the north to think they have advantage in the current Nigeria, when all this mess (the insurgency) is happening in the north. Every sensible person in the north should support that Nigeria should be modernised and we should have data to plan Nigeria very well, so that Nigeria as a whole will move forward together in progress. No north, no south!

“Do you think if Sir Ahmadu Bello wakes up today, he will be proud of the north we have today? The way they are going, they northerners are going to destroy themselves by themselves. It has nothing to do with Jonathan because people say, ‘Oh, Jonathan didn’t do this or that.’ What will he do? If you want to go and kill your wife and children in your house what will the local government chairman do about it? What can Jonathan really do when people want to destroy their place, so that you can say he is incompetent? Okay, say he is incompetent but you have destroyed your place.”

Gwoza Christians Release Disturbing Details About Six Girls Kidnapped By Boko Haram Militants In 2013

According to Saharareporters, the Gwoza Christian Community Association in Borno State has released details of disturbing disclosures made by six Christian girls who were abducted in 2013 by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

The girls were abducted last year from different locations in Gwoza local government area. Their statements revealed that, following their abduction, they were subjected to serial rapes by Boko Haram terrorists. In addition, they were turned into domestic slaves in various Boko Haram camps before they pulled off their daring and lucky escapes.

Istifanus Ibrahim, one of the Christians in Gwoza, disclosed that the extremist Islamist sect had many abducted girls in their camps long before their abduction of more than 200 students from Government Secondary School, Chibok, in Borno State drew international media attention and global outrage.

Below are the summaries provided by the Christian community in Gwoza from the extensive statements of the six girls who escaped from Boko Haram camps. The girls’ names and other identities have been concealed for their security and in order to protect them from stigmatization:

Captive for 12 days in Boko Haram Camp in Sambisa (15th May 2013 - 26th May 2013)

She boarded for commercial bus at Tashan Bama in Maiduguri on 15th May 2013. There were five men in the vehicle when they took off. She was the only female among them. When they reach Bama Local government around Firgi area in Borno State, some Boko Haram members with heavy weapons abducted them and they were taken to Boko haram camp in Sambisa Games Reserve.

Immediately after their arrival they slew the five men with knife in her presence. She was there in their camp for 12 days when they slew more than 50 people in her presence. Whenever they bring a hostage, they check their identity card and differentiate them base on their belief, if your Christian they killed you, if the victim happened to be Muslim they recruit them. Those who refused they slew them.

It was one faithful day on 26th may 2013 that she escaped when the insurgent distance themselves from them to service their weapons and equally trained the new recruit on how to handled guns. She was pondered on how to run when she saw how females were killed.

They told her to get ready for conversion the following morning, and fortunately God took control of the event and one young man among the captive took courage and jump into one of their cars and started it. Eventually she and other six young men entered the car and they drow off. Unfortunately the Boko Haram followed them and succeeded in killing four but she and the driver escaped. That was how they abandon the vehicle and trek for some more Kilometers to get to the main road.

Captive for 3 Months in Boko Haram at Gwoza Hills (12th May 2013 - 13th Sept 2013)

This was a girl abducted by the insurgents in early May 2013 and was in their custody for about three months before her escape in September, 2013 by the grace of God. Luckily they did not sexually abuse her as she was groomed to marry the insurgent leaders' junior brother. However, she suffered beating even at point of death to convert to Islam and forced to wear their 'hijab' as they go from one hiding came to another atop the mountain hills where they are based.

She even followed them to the attack on Gwna police station conveying the bullets they used during the attack. Her escaped gave her a new life of hope but never believed it was really true until she was taken out of Borno State.

Her parents' home and the whole village were attacked after her escape, burning all the houses and killing two people in revenge. She was later examined and found physically fine.

Held captive for 22 days in Boko Haram at Gwoza Hills (30th Sept. 2013 - 20th Oct. 2013)
It was around 8:00pm on 30th September, 2013 when Boko Haram with heavy weapons came and broke into her brothers room and shoot him. They took his wife out and put a gun to her head, but when they heard another strange event outside the compound, the insurgents came back again and asked the ladies including her to come out. There they captured herself, her sister & her brother's wife and took them away as captives. They were taken to the camp on the mountain top in Ghwa'a village where the leader of the Boko Haram stayed.
She who is a dedicated Christian was asked to denounced Christ and accept Islam or else she would be slaughtered. Out of fear she agreed and they ceremonially cited Quran verses, gave her a veil (Himar) and named her Maryam.

After converting her she was taken to (Emir) leader of the camp who was called Ibrahim Tada Nglayire and she was married one of the insurgents called Abdul, where she was sexually abused. After that, he asked her to perform an exercise of taking water from a kettle to bath with it as sign of cleansing from the sex they had. Which he called WAKAN JANABA.

The insurgents gets their money from External sources, she always heard them mentioning Arab countries etc. Some among their local sponsors whom they mention were some District Heads in Borno State and a member of the State House of Assembly . They always thanked them for supporting with money and protection. On the 20th of October, 2013, when the insurgent have left to get their ammunition, their leader's wife brought them together in a conversations. That was how she escaped.

Held captive for 22 days in Boko Haram at Gwoza Hills (30th Sept. 2013 - 20th Oct. 2013)

She was kidnapped by Boko Haram on 30th September, 2013. She was taken to their camp. The following sub-gang leader of the insurgent took her to the Emir, (Ibrahim Tadaghleke) for an update on how they captured them. When Ibrahim saw her, he immediately ordered her conversion to Islam and gave her a husband. The husband came in the night to sexually abused her, when she refused he brought his gun and knife to kill her if she attempt to stop him again. He left her when he discovered she was on her monthly period.

They normally speak Kanuri language, Arabic and Hausa talking about Some District heads and a member of the State House of Assembly. Popular in their conversation is that, they hate President Jonathan because he is Pagan and sent the Army to kill them. She escaped when she tactically dropped her shoes on the entrance of the door. She picked a kettle with pretence to enter toilet. That was how she made her way to escape. They went through serious challenges, but God save her.

She was captured and held as a slave by the Boko Haram group on 28th September, 2013. Their house was invaded by the insurgents. In their palour, they asked for their names. When they found out they were Christians, they went with her. They started going up the hill for almost 2 days on foot. When they reached a village called KWATARA, one of them went from there and entered another village. It took them additional (8) eight hours before they reach a place in a cave on top of Mandara mountains hills, where they were kept for almost two weeks before proceeded to another location

Held captive for 5 days in Boko Haram at Gwoza Hills (19th Nov. 2013 - 23th Nov. 2013)

They met her around the Cameroonian boarder, caught her and started beating her. One among the Boko Haram pulled her veil, tore it and tied her hands behind and started beating her with plastic pipes. Another one of the insurgents dragged her and tied another rope behind her and pulling her like animal. She was then taken to the mountains travelling throughout the night where they went to a village in the hill they call Hraza. It was too gloomy because there were so many branches within the caves. She quickly agreed to convert to Muslim with a knife of her throat, on 19 November, 2013. They cited Quranic verse which she repeats after them. She was given KALMAN SHAHADA. She saw a man called MALLAM where they were staying. He doesn't come out in a day time, neither does he follow them for operations, but he gives orders and instruction as final authority. He doesn't open his face. He is aways in a veil like Arab man, in all white clothes. The second in command was called Ibrahim Tadagleke and then mallam Audu and Mallam Saidu, whom were the operational commanders.

On the 21 November, 2013, the overall MALLAM, who was in charge of giving orders came out and went round the camp around 5:00pm - 6:00pm. He was accompanied by Ibrahim who they called Emir followed by operational commanders and then over 80 armed insurgents were behind him. Some among their sponsors where late Mohammed Gadafi before he died. People from Chad were used to import the weapons, on Carmel and herdsmen from Niger.

Their main funds comes from Afghanistan and Iraq. They always thanked the Arab countries. Most of the people that sponsored them locally were disguised. She escaped from them on 23 November, 2013.

LASU Students Urge Fashola To Lift Boko Haram Policy

The students of the Lagos State University (LASU) say there is no going back on their proposal to the state government to reduce the school fees to N46, 500 for returning students and N65, 500 for fresh students.

At a press briefing held in the Ojo Campus of the school on Monday, the Student Union President, Nurudeen Yusuf, told journalists that the students are unanimous in their resolve not to resume academic activities until the fees are reduced.

They appealed to the school authorities to close the portal for payment and registration for the new session until the state government makes a pronouncement on the fees as proposed by the students.
The students also appealed to parents and guardians to stand in solidarity with them and not to make any payments to the school.

They have also declared a week of what they call, “a mass protest against the Boko Haram policy of the Lagos state government”. The week long activities will see the students take to the streets again for peaceful marches, rallies and protests.

In a schedule of the fees, new intakes in the College of Medicine are to pay as much as N308,750 while the least fees are that of students in the Arts/ Education, N193,750.
In his democracy day message to the students, Governor Babatunde Fashola said he has passed on the position of the students to the State Executive Council, maintaining that his government is ready to make adjustments where necessary.

The students however feel that the government is taking too long to reach a decision, a decision which affects their future.

“Now we are saying we will take charge, we will go on protest, not even the 98 battalion will stop us” Yusuf said.

Meanwhile, the school authorities have released a calendar for resumption. The students say this is unfair considering that talks have not been concluded with the government. They are therefore appealing to parents and guardians to stand in solidarity with them and not make any payments.

APC CHAIRMANSHIP: IS TINUBU LOSING OUT?

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi and erstwhile deputy national chairman of Peoples

Two other aspirants, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, who are also in contention, are being propped up as fall-back options by the two blocs that have been built around the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and northern governors in the party.

Odigie-Oyegun, who was earlier being promoted by Tinubu, Vanguard learnt, may have lost out in a recent realignment that has seen the Tinubu camp shift allegiance to Sam Jaja.

Ikimi, who is being backed by a number of former governors and some northern governors in the party, Vanguard learnt, has received the full endorsement of erstwhile governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who has noticeably become a rallying point for the anti-Tinubu forces in the party.

Zoning the slot

Vanguard gathered that following the determination of the interim national chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, to step down at the convention due in two weeks, and the determination of those opposed to Tinubu to zone the office of the national chairman to the South-South/South-East, Tinubu had set his eyes on Odigie-Oyegun as the next national chairman of the party.

Odigie-Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State and Tinubu were arrowheads in the move to validate the 1993 presidential election won by Bashorun Moshood Abiola.

They were subsequently colleagues in the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO.

However, sources close to Tinubu disclosed that he recently changed his plans and opted for Sam Jaja, a candidate being pushed by governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi.

The move by Tinubu, Vanguard learnt, may have been a calculated one by the former Lagos State governor to regain his momentum in the party by dividing the ranks of the governors who had recently united to stop some proposals backed by Tinubu.

In working with Amaechi, the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, Tinubu, it was learnt, would hope to break the unity of the governors who had recently risen as a group to oppose proposals favoured by him.

Opposing forces

Besides influencing the appointment of one of their own, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, as chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, the governors also prevailed on the rezoning of the office of the national chairman to the South-South and the decision to host the national convention in Abuja.

Those backing Ikimi were last night hopeful that the Tinubu synergy with Amaechi would come to nothing.

“Tinubu is having problems with backing Ikimi because he believes Ikimi cannot be easily nudged,” one Ikimi supporter said yesterday.

The Amaechi factor

The move concerning Amaechi and Tinubu is despite parallel moves by associates of President Goodluck Jonathan to woo the Rivers State governor.

As part of the efforts in thawing the ice, the Federal Government last week released the Rivers State government-owned aircraft impounded by the Ministry of Aviation and gave permission for the authorities in Port Harcourt to import two armoured helicopters earlier procured to boost security in the state.

Efforts to get a reaction from the Rivers State governor and his aides were unsuccessful last night.

Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, have emerged favourite candidates of two major blocs in contention for the office of national chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC.

Aiding Boko Haram: Army Court-martials 10 Generals, 5 Others

No fewer than 15 senior military officers including 10 generals have been tried before a court-martial and found guilty of giving information and ammunition to Boko Haram terrorists.

In the recent past, the Army and the Defence Headquarters have raised the alarm that some of their officers and men are leaking official information to the terrorists and that some of them have been arrested and arraigned before some court-martials in some army divisions in the north.

Military sources told LEADERSHIP Newspaper that some of them who were tried at their division levels still have hope until the final review of the judgement at the headquarters in Abuja.

“There are a lot of arrests that have been made over some officers who were sabotaging the ongoing counter-insurgency operations. The suspects include about 10 generals and other ranks, not to talk of soldiers who have been found culpable of sabotaging our operations. They are facing trial before court-martial set up by their divisions; some have been found guilty, and some are still facing trial. Once the court martial rule, the recommendations are forwarded to the Army Headquarters or Defense Headquarters as the case may be,” a source disclosed.

Another top security source told our correspondent that four senior soldiers were found guilty of being disloyal and for working for the members of the sect.

“Four generals have been court-martialed for divulging high-class security information to the members of the sect. They were found guilty of leaking military strategies to the Boko Haram people. This was why many soldiers have been ambushed and killed by the Boko Haram,” the source added.

Our source who could not disclose the names of these generals simply said some senior military officers and soldiers from a particular section of the country are deeply involved in the treasonable acts.

“They have been found guilty of also collaborating with some top politicians in the country to make the country ungovernable for selfish reasons. A lot of re-organisation is going on in the military. Many generals will go. Some will be court-martialed and some will be forcefully retired,” he added. “The movement of our troops in the north-east have been leaked to the Boko Haram by many of our colleagues, but the Defence headquarters has realized that and is seriously considering redeployment of some senior officers out of the north-east.”

The army had, on Sept. 19, 2013, said its 3 Division had set up a general martial court to try erring officers and soldiers.

During a press briefing, the then director, army public relations, Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru, said the new court would instil discipline and professionalism among its troops based on Army Headquarters’ directives.

The court under general commanding officer Ebiobowei Awala was inaugurated on April 22 at Rhino Officers Mess, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, and has tried nine soldiers for various offences ranging from murder to manslaughter. But it was not clear at the time of fielding this report whether the generals were court -martialed by the same court.

Although efforts to confirm from the Defence Headquarters’ spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade, did not yield any result, a top serving general in the DHQ said a lot of trials were indeed going on: “A lot is happening. Those suspected are being tried, and this is why it is difficult to confirm or deny the story. But whenever the final verdicts are taken on these trials, the press would be briefed by the appropriate officers.”
